The renowned CeBIT trade show for the computer and technology industries has been canceled. Scheduled for the end of June 2019, the organizers of the event Deutsche Messe are abandoning CeBIT and it will no longer run as a standalone event. Started back in 1970, the event has been considered as one of the most influential in the IT and tech sectors. In the recent years, CeBIT has been experiencing difficulties to attract close to the million visitors it once did, in the height of its popularity. Struggling with constant decline and experiencing difficulties to gain the attention of the public, this year the organizers were expecting no more than 120,000 attendees, compared to the 200,000 in 2018.
As CeBIT served as barometer for the world technology development, this announcement puts an end of an era in the digital world in Germany. Some of the concerns of the industry are that the country might lose its limited, but important role in the digital world nowadays.
The managing board of Deutsche Messe points out the significant overlap of the sectors that are covered at the HANNOVER MESSE event and CeBIT. Some of the topics of CeBIT will be integrated in the following HANNOVER MESSE editions. The rest of the topics will be revised and present a matter of further discussion, whether they can be presented as new events.
The decline of interest in CeBIT is also associated with the growing popularity of both the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, as well as the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Apart from this, generally there is a reduced demand for horizontal trade shows such as CeBIT. Having this in mind, exhibiting companies that would traditionally choose CeBIT, would prefer to participate in industrial application industries, where the digitalization has been notable and expand their business network there.
